Your rising sign

What is my rising sign?

This one changes every two hours, so I need your birth time for it.

When were you born?

The day is enough to start. I can be more exact if you know more.

Your rising sign — the Ascendant — is the sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It is the first thing people meet, and in traditional astrology it is the doorway the whole chart is arranged around: the Ascendant decides where the first house starts, and every other house follows from it.

Why does my rising sign need a birth time?

Because the Earth turns. The whole zodiac passes over the horizon once a day, so the Ascendant moves through all twelve signs in twenty-four hours — a new one roughly every two hours.

Your Sun sign is safe within a day. Your rising sign is not safe within an afternoon. An hour of error is often a whole sign of error.

What if I do not know my birth time?

Gori will not guess it. Some apps quietly calculate from midday and hand you an Ascendant anyway; that is a number with no more meaning than a coin flip between two or three signs.

Houses can be approximated — Gori falls back to solar houses, a real traditional method, and says so every time it uses them. But the Ascendant is not an approximation, it is a value that is not there. So the honest answer is that you need the time, and it is usually on your birth certificate or in a hospital record.

Rising sign vs Sun sign — which one is "really" me?

Both, doing different jobs. The Sun is what you are trying to become. The rising sign is how you arrive — the manner, the pace, the first ten minutes.

When people say a horoscope "never sounds like me", the gap is often here: they are reading for the Sun and living mostly through the Ascendant.
