The houses — where it happens

If planets are who and signs are how, houses are where. They divide the chart into twelve areas of life — work, home, money, partners, the rest — and a planet placed in one says that drive shows up in that part of your week.

Houses come from the Earth turning, not from the planets moving. They are anchored to the horizon at your birth place and time, which is why the same chart cast an hour later can look substantially different.

The 1st house begins at the Ascendant — the degree of the zodiac rising over the eastern horizon at your birth minute. It is usually read as how you arrive: manner, body, the impression you make before you have said anything, which is often noticeably different from what you are actually like underneath.

The Midheaven, the highest point of the chart, opens the 10th and is read as standing and vocation. These two angles are the fastest-moving points in the whole chart, and both need a birth time to exist at all.

There are a dozen house systems and they disagree, sometimes sharply, about which house a planet falls in. Gori uses whole sign: the sign on your Ascendant becomes the entire 1st house, the next sign the entire 2nd, and so on, twelve signs to twelve houses.

It is the oldest system, it is what Hellenistic astrology used, and it has one practical virtue worth stating plainly — it does not break at high latitudes, where the quadrant systems produce houses so distorted that some of them swallow three signs. Being told which system you are reading in is not a small thing, and most apps do not tell you.
