What a birth chart actually is

A birth chart — natal chart is the same thing — is a diagram of where the Sun, Moon and planets were, seen from the exact spot on Earth where you were born, at the minute you were born. That part is not a belief. It is a position calculation, the same arithmetic that tells you when an eclipse will happen, run backwards to your birthday.

What astrology adds is a reading. It takes those positions and treats them as a language for talking about a life. That step is a tradition, not a finding, and it is worth being clear about which half you are looking at: the positions are exact, the meanings are interpretation.

The four things a chart is made of

Every reading is built from the same four ingredients, and once you can name them the whole thing stops looking like a wheel of symbols.

Planets are the actors — what part of you is involved. Signs are the manner — how that part behaves. Houses are the setting — which area of life it shows up in. Aspects are the relationships — which parts are arguing, and which are working together.

A single line of a real reading uses all four: Mars (drive) in Libra (by negotiating) in the 6th house (at work) squaring Saturn (against a limit that will not move). Nothing more mysterious than that is happening.

Why the time of day matters so much

The Sun takes a year to cross the zodiac, so your Sun sign is safe within a day. The Ascendant — the sign coming up over the horizon — moves through all twelve in twenty-four hours. It changes roughly every two hours.

That is why birth time is asked for so insistently. Without it you still have every planet by sign, and every aspect between them, which is most of a chart. What you do not have is the Ascendant or the houses, so nothing can be placed in an area of life. A reading without a birth time is a reading about what you are like, not about where it lands.

How Gori builds yours

Gori computes your chart from your birth date, time and coordinates using the astronomy-engine library — real ephemeris arithmetic, not a table of pre-made charts. It uses the tropical zodiac and whole sign houses.

The chart is never stored. Only your birth details are kept, and the positions are recalculated every single time something is written for you. That sounds like a technical detail and it is not: it means the day you correct your birth time, every reading you get afterwards is right, with nothing to clear or rebuild.

The planets

If you would rather see it on your own chart than in the abstract — Gori computes yours and writes it out. Today’s reading is free.
