Reading a chart without a birth time

Most people do not know the minute they were born, and most astrology software quietly carries on as if they did. That is the part worth being careful about: some of what is missing can be worked around and some of it cannot, and the difference is not a matter of taste.

Every planet by sign, and every aspect between them. That is most of a chart. The Sun takes a year to cross the zodiac and the outer planets take decades, so nothing about them is in doubt because you were born at eight rather than at two.

What you get is a reading about what you are like rather than about where it lands.

The Ascendant. It moves through all twelve signs in twenty-four hours — a new one roughly every two hours. Without a time it is not an uncertain value, it is an absent one. Gori leaves it out and says so.

The houses, in their exact form. Houses are measured from the Ascendant, so if there is no Ascendant there are no real houses.

Some certainty about the Moon. It moves about thirteen degrees a day, so a day of uncertainty is nearly half a sign of uncertainty.

Houses can. Gori falls back to solar houses — the Sun sign is treated as the first house. That is not a workaround invented for missing data; it is a real traditional method, and it is what newspaper horoscopes have always used. It is rougher than the real thing, and every reading that uses it says so.

The Ascendant cannot. There is no honest way to approximate a value that turns over twelve times a day. Guessing it and presenting the guess as a chart is the line Gori will not cross — two of the eight reports stay unavailable rather than being written around it.

A birth certificate is the usual answer, though not every country records the time on it. Hospital records, a baby book, or asking a parent are the others. In several countries you can request the long-form certificate, which is the one that carries the time.

If none of that works, put in the date and place and read what comes back. Then correct it later if you find out — the chart is recalculated from your details every single time, so the day you fix the time, everything you get afterwards is right, with nothing to clear or rebuild.
