The twelve signs — the manner, not the person
A sign is a thirty-degree slice of the zodiac, and it describes the manner in which a planet operates. Mars in Aries and Mars in Libra want the same thing; one goes and takes it, the other negotiates for it first. The drive is the planet. The style is the sign.

Elements and modalities
The twelve are sorted two ways at once, and the pair of labels tells you most of what a sign does.
Elements are the temperature. Fire acts, earth builds, air thinks, water feels. Modalities are the timing. Cardinal signs start, fixed signs hold, mutable signs adapt. Every combination appears exactly once: Aries is the fire that starts, Leo is the fire that holds, Sagittarius is the fire that adapts.
Tropical and sidereal
You may have read that your sign is “wrong” because the constellations have drifted. That is a real astronomical fact and a misunderstanding of what Western astrology measures.
The tropical zodiac — the one Gori and nearly all Western astrology use — is anchored to the seasons, not to the constellations. Zero degrees Aries is the March equinox, wherever the stars happen to be. Sidereal astrology, used in Indian traditions, is anchored to the constellations instead, which is why the two systems give different signs. Neither is a mistake; they are measuring from different starting points, and each is consistent within itself.
